Ahmad Maslan's prophecy

It's good to harbor confidence that we (BN) will win the upcoming general elections with a two-third majority, better than what we recorded in 2008. Taking back the seats lost to the opposition is also part of our main strategy.

But what strategy?

Umno Information chief Ahmad Maslan has been going around like a math teacher, compiling and adding numbers to inject that optimistic feel among pro-BN Malaysians. He should know that it was the people like him who contributed to our 'losses' in the previous national poll.

Over confidence, loose argument and illogical approach introduced in 2008 failed to help the ruling party retain that strong two-third majority at the Parliament. We also lost five State Assemblies.

It's easy to say that BN will win, that BN will win big and is capable of wresting 20 opposition seats. I like it, and I believe many others support that idea. Its the same story Ahmad tells those who attend his function nationwide.

However, what is the formula to support his prophecy? Just telling Umno members to work hard when the opposition, on the other hand tells its supporters to 'work harder?'

Tell me and others, what is the calculation or the basis to support that '20 seats' when his information wing is not doing much to woo votes, just like the weakening Infomation Dept and JASA under the Ministry of Information, Communications and Cultre?

With such statement (has repeats it everywhere he goes), the opposition laughs at him and BN, and they will worker extra harder to retain the 20 seats in Ahmad's list.
MALACCA: Barisan Nasional is capable of wresting back 20 opposition-held seats to secure a two-thirds majority in the coming general election, said Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan.

He is confident that Barisan can retain the 140 parliamentary seats it won and capture five (of 23 seats held by) PAS, five (of 29 held by) DAP and 10 (of the 31) PKR seats.
He said the confidence was based on various factors including the problems faced by the opposition in several seats that it had won.
"It's logical because, for example, seven of the PKR seats are already problematic for the opposition as six as the incumbents left the party to become independents while it lost the Hulu Selangor seat," he said after attending the opening of a professionalism-enhancing retreat.
Ahmad, who is Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was also an important factor in ensuring victory for BN.
"The people have benefited from the various incentives and privileges introduced by the prime minister such as the Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) and 1Malaysia Book Voucher, as well as the transformation programmes."
Besides that, he said, the winnable candidates to be fielded by BN would also contribute to the ruling coalition recapturing some of the opposition-held seats.
However, Ahmad reminded that victory could be achieved if BN members did not resort to "cah keting" or sabotage against the party or the chosen candidates.- Bernam
Over confidence and complacency led to the 'disastrous defeat' BN incurred about 4 years ago. Everywhere the leaders go, they will relate the same old story again and again. Ahmad Maslan has been giving talks and conducting courses to prepare the 'information people' face the general elections.

And again, what is his formula to undermine the opposition?

I like the confidence shown. May not be mere hopeful thinking. And does not appear to me as over confidence.

As information chief, I believe he goes all over the country and talks with all levels of UMNO people on the ground and high up. He should know what he's talking about.

The example Ahmad Mazlan gave is realistic - 6 PKR incumbents absconded their party to become independents - though it escaped my notice all this while - and the PKR Hulu Selangor seat was already captured at a previous PRK.

And he is talking about capturing just five of 23 seats held by PAS, five of 29 held by DAP and 10 of the 31 PKR seats. I think these are achievable.

He must be receiving regular reports and feedback from the constituencies. The only danger is those reports and feedback are not accurate, even contradicting the actual situation, pleasing-the-bosses and sabotaging kind.

Hope they really take care of and/or take preventive or preemptive action on the potential saboteurs, especially in view of changing prospects for some aspirants due to the need for winnable candidates.

Waiting to act only during the election campaigning would be disastrous. They should have some idea on who the potential saboteurs are even at this stage.

I hear they have a formidable army of cyber troopers - didn't someone estimate the the pro-BN bloggers, Facebook and Tweeter account holders at over 10,000, and several hundred are hardcore, regular bloggers, Facebookers and Tweeters?

I don't even mind if they have a dirty tricks department that engage in the non physically destructive acts. After all, the Opposition has been known to engage in spreading lies, deceits, half truths, slants and twists.

For example, who knows if any of the Selangor garbage contractors or sub-contractors (and the stupid DAP Exco Ronnie Liu's system ended up with scores of them) sabotaging Selangor PR Government by not doing proper garbage collection at certain prominent places - their risk of losing the contract covered, say, by some UMNO-arranged financial sources.

Or if any of those issuing summonses in Kelantan have been "di kira" by UMNO people.

Or even the Chinese fellow named Zairil Khir Johari in the Komtar 28th Floor is a plant by UMNO. Yes, far fetched, but that's the sort of things I don't mind seeing happen.

I agree that UMNO must not be over confident and must not be presumptuous. They must be checking and counter-checking their facts, information, reports and feedbacks.

But Najib has been going for any few votes he can get. Anybody ever thought he would change Malaysia's policy on Israel by allowing Christians (and all Malaysians?) to visit Jerusalem, a part of the territory called Israel?

And Najib did that after ensuring Malaysian aid missions have got into Gaza several times, preparing to soften the reaction of those who dislike his new policy. The non-PAS voters, I mean, because the PAS hardcores he won't bother, just as Anwar himself doidn't bother when he spoke for relations with Israel and the defence of the security of Israel some time back.

I think Najib has got one over Anwar in that respect.

Jai, this guy is doing more harm than good to BN. Even the Felda areas which used to be solid BN bastions is being breached. Thanks to him and his FGV ideas. The foray into KPF listing is another FGV in the making.

I suppose (and hope) they have some secret strategies to put down the Opposition.

But the Israeli policy change must have been a secret strategy - not many people knew it was going to happen until a few days before Xmas. That must have been vote catching, whatever others may be saying.

But whether they have plans to undress Lim Guan Eng to his underwear at election time is something I want to hear - and see.

I like to believe they have such plans. Like the scandal of Perak DAP Chief Ngeh and the vast tract of land in Kelantan. Maybe they had planned to expose it at PRU13, but had to do it now because Ngeh was accusing Perak BN of irregularities

Ambiga said PRU13 would be "the dirtiest ever". Maybe she knows things that we don't. But I won't do a James Bond trying to sleep with her to know what she knows!

salam tn,

Yes JR you are right. Ahmad Maslan is a parrot with poor memory.

Ahmad maslan need to address the voters who need to be convinced and they know the bickerings are there, everywhere. The voters look for who offer them good services, stability ,jobs , reliable candidates and 'feel good' govt plans. RTM's failed to win over viewers and voters with intelligent interpretations of the govt's efforts.

The DAP is doing better because they are not afraid and not apologetic to say and to show that they are chinese chauvinist and will look after chinese interest first. They have no qualms about showing that they are anti Malay if that is what it takes to make the chinese rally around them. Thus the battlecry - that Chinese are made poorer by malays, chinese rights taken by malays, the chinese are being treated with cruelty and they wnat their supporters to despise and distrust anything to do with the malays -ie the Govt, ie UMNO ie any malay leadership that show potential in getting the people to rally around them. RTM have no answer to these.

Is to be close to the Prime minister to fan false courage and false prophecies base on hearsay and gut feeling? But what does the fact show ? Although we hope the facts are being shared quietly amongst the leadership. Some of us do know the facts.

JASA and MInsitry KPKK have become unreliable and untrustworthy even within the Govt and some UMNO leaders. Its tragic and a disaster waiting to repeat itself. It will unfold in the next few weeks and months, too late for counter measures. 'Dont rely on Jasa figures alone! say key insiders. 'Let private body you trust carry out the survey we need the truth' say the insider. The people may favour PM but you want them to like the govenrment , the party and its leaders too! Not just PM and the minister of communciation. There are no 'faces' promoted as the look and face of the party , of the govenrment. These faces are key to election machinery. Prime Minister and DPM cannot be everywhere a few days before and during elections. Not much mileage is given to the DPM compared to the Minister of communciation. Why? Surely the Minister of KPKK cannot be in the list of faces that the people want to see and reach out to. This is no secret even amongst UMNO.

By now RTM should promote faces and voices of or pro BN - made visible, seemingly available, accessible . They are prmoted to reach out to the people, to the young , to mothers and their children, to the old and neglected, to the voters. Live streaming over rtm does not exist inspite of this being ministry for new media. There is no reliable internet newspaper thats pro government in answer to Malaysiakini carrying blatant anti govt lies.

This is the only Prime Minister who have done and made changes in a short time, and captured the imagination of people across board. Yet RTM makes the PM look superficial, like he's bodeking the people for votes. The human touch is missing. Now is the phase where you make the leaders, voices and impressive individuals, NGO who are pro govt - more human, in touch and care for the people, the voters. These are voices for the PM, for the GOvt.

Govt funded initiatives and programmes have improved the livelihood and future of hundreds of thousands but RTM have not captured them except to show leaders shaking hands.
Programmes on Anti poverty and economic benefit sharing programmes deserves a more intelligent approach. How many times can you show the PM shaking hands or the minister of KPKK before people are desensitised to it?

If only RTM can meet our expectation halfway , RTM can win over the people , the voters whose hatred and distrust for key leaders and their family have been deeply ingrained by opposition propoganda. RTM have done a bad job in overcoming the hatred propaganda against the govt leadership.

RTM is rendered useless and ineffective languishing at the bottom of the table of tv stations - and very comfortable thinking it doesnt affect voting.

This is the sort of scandal I hope will come out in increasing numbers and magnitude during PRU13 election campaign - I picked the following from another blog -

You dedah (revealed) you watch out I will go after you’’.

This is another of those secret strategy that I think UMNO must have thought out since a long time ago, action taken to time it just before PRU13 (I like to think that UMNO Selangor has planned and arranged for this) -

a news report stating that some 2,000 single mothers are suing the Selangor government for RM10.9mil in allowances due to them as promised by Pakatan Rakyat in its 2008 election manifesto.

The plaintiffs are demanding that they be paid the single mothers’ allowance of RM100 a month for 54 months (from April 1, 2008, till Oct 30, 2012), which works out to RM10.9mil.

Let's hope the single mothers get something from the court case. UMNO surely would have got PR besmirched.

Pak Zawi,

Naive lah to think that FGV are his ideas. It's no small venture that one. And it's doing well, isn't it?

Nagaman,

Ahmad Maslan must not be expected to do all the information job. There's the information Minister and all the agencies under him.

Ahmad Maslan handles the UMNO information network - getting the messages across down to the grassroots and getting the feedback from the grassroots to the political bosses.

Anonymous said...

Ngaman,

The DAP cannot be compared with UMNO as far as information feedback is concerned. Former DAP Vice Chairman Tunku Aziz said there was no feedback up down or down up in DAP - he was told to attend CEC meetings, nobody told him what was to be discussed and he found that many things were already discussed and agreed behid closed dorrs among the Lims and a few others, the CEC was merely to endorse those decisions, communist China communist party-style.

Anyway, DAP has been 46 years old and managed to reach only Penang. UMNO has 3.5 million members and a much bigger organization, freedom of expression, no Gag Orders and expulsion will nally, so much more difficult to manage, unlike DAP.

They are made up of largely Chinese chauvinists and racists, so it doesn't need much of a battlecry to get support from members and other Chinese.

The Job of Information Chief is Equivalent to a Propaganda Chief. Ahmad is the Heinrich Himmler who was Hitler's Information Chief aka Propaganda Minister.

His Antics throughout the year symbolizes his role...He has ti instill confidence in UMNO members through lies and intimidation.
