Indonesia plans another Konfrontasi...

Many expressed disappointment at how the Indonesians treated our contingent to the Sea Games. There were mocked, booed and mobbed. They were only very provocative toward us, and not contingents from the rest of Asean.

Reading Wong Chun Wai's On The Beat makes us wonder why are the Indonesians' hatred towards Malaysia gets thicker and thicker. The sports meet is being turned into a diplomatic bandwagon to incite the whole country to despise Malaysians at its utmost.

"The Malaysian team has accepted the fact that the Indonesian crowd would openly show their contempt and disrespect to our national anthem by refusing to stand up when it is played. But it’s gone beyond that – whenever the Negaraku is played, the crowd would blare horns, shout and jeer.

"There have also been instances where Indonesian fans held up their middle fingers, in a symbolic “up-yours” protest, to photographers whenever Malaysians compete.

"This lack of finesse and unsporting behaviour reached an outrageous level when Malaysian newsmen were banned from covering the last day of the swimming event," Chun Wai wrote.

Yes. true indeed. They hate us so much that the effigy of Prime Minister Najib Razak was burn to symbolise their displeasure at us. Read Mazidul's Boneka Perdana Menteri Malaysia Dibakar to understand more about our neighbors' true feeling for us.

No. I do not hate the Indonesians. They are our close neighbors. However, their attitude of late reminds me of Sukarno's Konfrontasi to 'Ganyang Malaysia' after Sarawak and Sabah decided to join Malaysia.

I think most Indonesians still can't accept the fact that it was the choice of the Sarawakians and Sabahans to join the newly formed Malaysia in 1963. And they are still sore when Malaysia won Sipadan island over decades of legal battle.

Some recent developments also didnt reflect the true spirit of 'serumpun' (brotherhood) between the two countries. As Chun Wai wrote:

"Let’s not even consider the part of being the gracious host, or Asean solidarity. But forget about the much touted “bangsa serumpun” (same racial group) and the so-called commonality of a close neighbour? All of these flew out of the window at the Games."

We host about 3 million Indonesians who work in various sectors. Sometimes I overheard their 'provocative' remarks about Malaysia on the LRT, KTM Komuter and even buses. They are here to earn a living but they harbor the intention to run us down.

Come Dec 1, about 80,000 Indonesian maids will come to Malaysia since Jakarta lifted the 3-year moratorium. And how do we treat them? If the Indonesians think Malaysia is full of hooligans, may as well they don't come here. In fact, 3 million of them are already posing us with a lot of problems.

Why are they so hostile towards us? And what do they actually want from us?

To launch another Konfrontasi and make Malaysia part of their territories like what they did to Timor Timur and Irian Jaya? No wonder they don't respect our flag and national anthem! They might already have plan with their 3 million who are in Malaysia!

Sometimes it doesn't really pay being nice!

the indonesians also cant take the fact that we are better developed than them, that we are much better than them in some aspects.

they are only better in provoking others!

Malaysian do the same to Israelis.

Salam,
So true, the more we're nice to people, the more they step on our heads.
In our eagerness to resurrect the Greater Malay Nation - Melayu Raya in the '30s-50s, the Indonesians and the Filipinos had their own agenda on Sarawak and Sabah.
To the Indonesians, the more successful and the more charitable we are to them, the more they seem to despise us.
To them, whether it's in terms of the stirrings of nationalism or development of language, arts and culture, they'd always be the Big Brother who paved the way, set the precedent, imposed industry protectionism and made proprietary claims.
However, it's not surprising that there are insurgent Malaysians who instigated the Indonesians' resentment towards us.

Bujai,

Not sometime but in so far as the Indonesians it never pay to be nice to them.

We have been too accommodating and to a certain extent too submissive to them. Take the presence of millions of Indonesians illegal immigrants in this country for example. At one time we termed them as 'pendatang haram' but later changed it to 'pendatang tanpa izin' following the Indonesian govt protest. They alleged the term 'haram' bore a negative religious connotation. It may sound petty but this has indirectly worked on their psyche ergo make them more emboldened to enter this country by whatever means.

Sukarno's grand design of imperialism has not died and buried together with his body. Its spirit started to rekindle and gained impetus following the election of Sukarnoputri as Indonesian President. She may not be the President now but she still has her staunch supporters and diehards spread all over the country.

Our U-23 footballers will be playing against the Indonesians to-morrow in a stadium which has since been renamed Gelora Sukarno, Senayan. So you can imagine the atmosphere which may be akin to a battle ground. I pray that our players will beat them in their own turf. Teach them who are the masters.

The cabinet has since approved for a chartered flight to bring back our young footballers perhaps over and above the barracuda. This has never happened in the history Malaysia's international tournament.

Inilah negara serumpun - a wrongly misplaced nostalgia.

i think its time to review our policy with indonesia.

we better safeguard our country by not having any ties with them, rather than being treated as their no.1 enemy at all time!

salam,

the prob with us is that, we are being too nice to them. we gave anything they want, including higher wages for maids and other workers. as they form the majority of foreign workers in malaysia, they tend to pust for various demands which we sometimes dont give to our own citizens.

so, who to blame?

our system is damnly corrupt. our politicians are making tonnes of money by allowing unlimited number of indonesians into the country.

that's why!

to hishamudin hussein - limit the number of indons who want to work here, dont renew their permit and send the hell out of those who violated our immigration law.

employ more from other coountries like cambodia and vietnam because they know how to respect malaysia although we dont need such a high respect. but at least they know how to appreciate our goodwill, unlike the indonesians!

Just stop giving them money. Kick out the ones already here, stop giving any help when tsunamis and earthquakes hit their country and turn a deaf ear and blind eye to any pleas of help. It is funny how the Indonesian work ethic...from the so called corporate figures to their maids...they seem to have the same mentality. Once you have worked with them or they work for you, you can read them like a book....never trust them...full of crap. Only 0.01% can be considered ethical. Chances are very rare that you can come across such characters in your life time....

Hit them where it hurts - Tell the 3mil. Indons working here that every sen that they earn here must be spent HERE and not remit any of it back to Indonesia. This simple act will do wonders to our economy as well discourage more Indons from sneaking into our country.Indonesia and The Philippines are very dependent on their workers' remittance to keep their economies floating. We need to send a clear message to these hooligans that they cannot bite the hands that feed them....

Wow, 1ASEAN whereby every citizens in the ASEAN can travel, inter-marriage, interchange residence and awarded ICs for each country's election based on residency & tax paying status in ASEAN countries rather than individual national citizenship. 1Malaysia will soon be 1ASEAN. By end of this century the ASEAN region will be homogenous. This current animosity will soon be forgotten.

The rational among both sides are slowly being dragged into this petty mess which i fear might spew into a major big time mess. malaysians feeling superior, indonesians feeling inferior, superiority/inferiority complex issues...sometimes perceived to be so by either party, sometimes actually being so...indonesians accusing (some being justified) malaysians of some crime eg stealing their culture (heheh, i was told to "f*** off maling sial" by an indonesian online chess player, even before i even said a single word), hurting their citizens that come over to work as maids, stealing their territories and generally looking down on their people, BUT THEY FORGET!!!!...that we too suffer from their peoples doing!! pffft!...crimes done in malaysia by indonesians ....STEALING (maling!), ROBBING (maling!), KILLING, RAPING...these crimes done on our homeland by those that come over legally and some done by those that come in illegally on the initial intention of looking for greener pastures. Just for the record, they have even attempted an attack on our homeland before! Recently they have even indiscriminately wrongly accused us of adjusting the borders of Kalimantan and Sarawak! and furthermore, organizing protests that include acts of burning OUR flag and throwing SH*T into/at our embassy buildings!! MaasyaaAllah!! So, to compare who has done what, I think if you really lay bare the records, put all crimes done against each other side by side, and add them up, I swear that what crime they have done to us outnumber what we have done to them. AND ..IF the indonesian government were to really open their eyes to this TRUTH, IF they were to really accept the reality of the facts, IF they were to really act responsibly, they should be SCREAMING THEIR HEARTS OUT to their own people, to shut up and have a good look at themselves. The Indonesian government should loudly proclaim what is right and what is wrong sensibly and not play to the right/left winged sentiments so as to make sure ALL indonesians understand the government's stance on any issues with malaysia, and so that WE also know what their government really thinks of us.
WE on the other hand, should take stronger action on those that treat their maids cruelly. as for their cries of us stealing their culture..pfft...we both came from the same root culture, too many similarities in our cultures to really pinpoint who owns what..as for Negaraku?? the tune comes from the song Terang Bulan!..so what??? who actually wrote that song or composed that tune?..just wiki it.
Both sides should work together to come to a good end to this matter, but more work needs to be done from the indonesian side.
