Mainstream papers MUST carry balls, bro!

The mainstream newspapers are 'government's propaganda tool'. They belong to the ruling party and its components. New Straits Times, The Star, Utusan Malaysia, Berita Harian and others, name it. Just like Harakah, Suara Keadilan and Rocket playing 'tools' to Pas, PKR and DAP propaganda.

My advise to National Union of Journalists (NUJ) of Malaysia president Hata Wahari, dont tell them what to do. I mean our mainstream papers - the group editors or editor-in-chief and their managing editors are political appointees. They have to play dumb and obey all instruction from the top or out they go.

Since 1980, I have seen many changes to the helm of each newspaper companies, especially when a new leader took over the government. Each prime minister would like to install a new team who could safeguard and protect the interest of the government.

You yourself have seen a few, bro. I am not disputing what you said Sunday that Malaysian newspapers should stop becoming 'propaganda tools' for the government. You were damn right about it but you missed something - that this mainstream papers either belong to Umno, MCA, MIC or other BN component parties.

The only different is in their trend. During the 1980 and 1990s, they were business-driven. They competed among each other to win high readership and big revenues from advertisements. However, they turned into politically-driven since the era of Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Most of them begun to lose to new media and new newspapers.

Why? The 'play balls' too much. The editor-in-chief are merely puppets to top politicians. They are the best 'yes-men' the country ever had. If not for sports and entertainment pages, the whole content of their newspapers would be attributed to party and individual news. So much so, readers got fed up and stop buying and reading.

Aaahhh!!! This is what our newspapers are all about, bro! Asked NUJ former president Yazid Othman about it, or any other senior journalists, including those who have retired. Its a fair game as the two groups got their own masters to support and protect.

However, I salute your guts in making such statements, i.e "The union also asks editors of mainstream media especially Utusan Malaysia, New Straits Times, Berita Harian and the The Star to play the role of disseminating information to the public and not as propaganda machinery of the government, political parties, or any individual.”

It was a frank and open statement. But please remember, being frank sometimes doesnt pay...

the editorial which supports the ruling govt is okay but to publish a 'nothing' news about the govt and its ministers, including their wifes, are nauseating!

why worry?

since the govt controls all mainstream papers, ask pm, dpm, ministers, dep ministers and others to buy ad space.

that will safe the papers from incuring loses after loses.

even rosmah too can buy up few pages in every papers everyday to hilite her activities, etc

fair or not?

they are not only puppets.

memang benar,

NUJ is right.

mainstream papers should give more space to development news... news that will inject patriotism and entrepreneurship to the people.

no need to publish news and picture of a minister giving a rm1,000 donation to a school... no news value!

most who manage this newspaper companies are known for their 'kuat mengampu'.

but we got to understand why. they want to keep their seat as long as possible and 'makan gaji buta' up to RM50,000 per month.

even a few who were sidelined and resigned during pak lah's era were picked again, including one or two who are pro-anwar.

we know laaaaar!

jai,

PUNDEK!

bro,

those at the top are your friends, too, am i not right?

its the usual thing la bro. pro-govt papers are owned by bn component parties.

the opp too got their own papers which fully support and uphold their ideology.

so, what is wrong with that?

memang patut kita sokong kerajaan tapi takkanlah berita pasal bini menteri beli seluar dalam baru pun nak masuk liputan jugak!

Cari makan di Utusan said...

Presiden NUJ,
