Jihad against Switzerland? Absurd!

Latest: Minaret-opposing Swiss politician converts to Islam

On this day when Prophet Muhammad was born, I am saddened by a new development in Libya and Switzerland.

In Switzerland, a beautiful country which I had visited twice, some fanatics, according to reports, are demolishing mosques and Muslim praying halls just because the people voted against the building of minarets.

In Libya, leader Muammar Gaddafi (whom I met and interviewed in 1984 after the bombings of Benghazi and Tripoli by the Americans) has called for Muslims to launch a 'jihad' against the Swiss people and government (read Bernama h e r e).

Islam is a moderate religion. For Gaddafi to declare a war is not appropriate. For Switzerland to demolish the mosques and its despise for Islam is most uncalled for even though the Muslim extremism and Sept. 11 were used as the reasons.

Honestly, I dont agree with either Gaddafi or the Swiss government. I may call both as the worse than the extremist among Muslims, the Christians and others.

sir,

i am a swiss in malaysia. the actual situation is not similar to what is being reported worldwide. yes, there was a 'referendum' which saw more than 55 per cent of our people against the building of minarets, and NOT against the building of mosques. however, the muslims insisted on the minarets, resulting in a few people lost their balance and started to demolish one minaret. the foreign media were so quick in making assumption as if the government was behind it. in fact, the government had issued a warning before the referendum that switzerland might be labeled as anti-islam and racist. just like malaysia, switzerland gives freedom of religion. however, the only issue here is the minaret. even without minarets, mosques in switzerland are not exposed to any religios danger or threat. what gaddafi is doing has something to do with his diplomatic row with the swiss immigration not along ago when they detained his two sons. one was released while the other will go home very soon. i dont think muslims around the world, especially here in malaysia will support his call for jihad. its more of his personal problems. i would like to urge malaysian media to go to switzerland and see for yourself whether they are really tearing down mosques as alleged by gaddafi. we are peace loving nation.

thank you

we have the united nations to lodge reports about such things.

libya is one of un members, so better seek advise from the world body rather than taking partial move.

not practical. i dont think the oic will permit such aggression.

The Swiss people have spoken via a referendum to ban construction of minaret for mosques. Notice that Muslims worldwide actually respect the decision by not having any demonstration in front of Swiss embassy anywhere in the world.

Let there be a future decision by Muslims made via referendum be respected, even when the decision is about banning alcohol at convenient stores, implementation of hudud law or independence from a country.
