How much should be spent...

Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar said Umno must draw a line as to how much a candidate can spend for party elections. Brilliant idea, sir!

He also suggested Umno to adopt the ways how candidates of the US presidential elections raise their funds and spend them.

Well... it is time for Umno to to so. After so many years of money-politics which led to a few senior officials being suspended, Syed Hamid's view should be well attended to.

However, what will be the wise 'ceiling' for such campaigning expenses and in what context the money should be spent, is up to the party leadership to decide.

In previous party elections, some candidates were said to have spent between RM200,000 and RM30 million to secure votes from delegates.

Do this people really got that amount of money, anyway? Looks like the delegates are the ones making money...

Dear Jai,

I don't agree in emulating the US Presidential election in term obtaining and using of campaign fund.

Perhaps, we Malaysian must understand that, in US, lobbying is a profession. A lobbyist can represent companies such as Hulliburton, Arms Vendors, Pharmaceutical interest, Power Producers, Car manufacturers, Gays Movement and so on.

This lobbyist then collected the funds and channel it to the Presidential candidate and ensure that, once the President is elected, the funder will be accorded with special consideration or favors.

I perceived this as a corrupt practice, but for USA, it is legitimate.

In UMNO money politics has been in practice since Tengku Razaligh Vs Tun Musa days and was further escalated during Wawasan team.

To eradicate money politic will be the same as eradicating prostitution.

bro,
syed hamid was just trying to play smart to outdo the rest of the VP candidates.

we know him as another dirty politician at his own kota tinggi constituency.

why must we put a ceiling to their spendings?

top umno leaders and most of their division heads are money hunters. there were cases where general elections allocation went into their own pockets instead of the candidates, just because they were not nominated.

money politics is rampant in umno. is there a way to stop it? no... why? because when took place before the leaders' eyes, they did nothing about it and even did the same thing.

adamharis,
that's sy hamid's idea. i dont agree at all. however, malaysian lobbyists can also represent some entities such as khazanah, LTAT or even the financial institutions.

to some extent, it may come from big taukes, dont u think so?

who is your funder, anyway bro?

bujai,
those who spends money to garner votes are the ones to be listed by umno. there should be a mchanism to detect such persons. if not, those with money will dominate umno... forever

if sy hamid is sincere, he should disclose the amount he spent for his division.

umno belongs to those rich and famous. gone are the days when the party didnt think about money politics and backstabbing.

umno now is being dominated by those with cash and lots of properties. with this, they can easily but votes and glory.

what syed hamid said was right, in the context that it is time to put a halt to money politics. let rank and file be evident of one's ticket to top position.

i agree with adamharris who say its no point to emulate the US way of managing campaign funds. they are more corrupt than us. to some extent, they get rough in their actions and tactics.

we have our own way of doing things.

PS... sy hamid may join hadi awang for liking US-style too much
